Island Air is expanding its air service to the Kapalua West Maui Airport

Island Air is expanding its air service to the Kapalua West Maui Airport, adding two more flights between Kapalua and Honolulu beginning June 15, according to an announcement from the air carrier.

The addition brings the carrier’s total number of daily flights between Oahu and West Maui to 12.

Island Air’s Kapalua flights use 37-passenger DeHavilland Dash 8 aircraft, powered by two jet-prop turbine engines. Flights include beverage service.

To promote its Kapalua-Honolulu flights, Island Air is offering $20 discounts on round-trip tickets ($10 off for one-way fares) for all of its routes, but tickets must be purchased no later than today. Discounts are good for travel through July 12.

Mokulele Airlines announced last week that it will offer four flights a day to West Maui beginning July 1.

Island Air announced in February that it plans to add three aircraft to its fleet by the end of the year and three more next year. For reservations or other information, go online to www.IslandAir.com or call (800) 652-6541.

About the Island Air

In 1980, Princeville Airways (now Island Air) was incorporated by Colorado-based Consolidated Oil and Gas as a subsidiary and began scheduled service between Honolulu and Princeville, on Kaua’i, with two DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft.

While service was extended over the next seven years to small community destinations on other islands, Princeville Airways’ main function was to transport passengers to and from the Princeville Resort. By early 1987, Princeville’s fleet had grown to eight Twin Otters.

In May 1987, Aloha Airlines’ parent company, Aloha Airgroup, purchased Princeville Airways and renamed it Aloha Island Air. More flights were then added to its daily schedule to meet the growing demand for commuter air service to Hawai’i’s resort destinations.

In 1992, the company applied to register “Island Air” as its trade name, giving it a distinct identity. In 1995, Island Air received FAA “Part 121″ certification, which allowed it to operate larger aircraft. That April, Island Air took delivery of its first 37-seat Dash 8, ushering in a new era of service.

In December 2003, a purchase agreement was signed between Aloha Airgroup and Gavarnie Holding, LLC, a family-owned company. The sale was completed on May 11, 2004, making Island Air Hawaii’s third independent airline.

In March 2006, Island Air received DOT approval to offer large carrier aircraft with over 66 seats. Island Air has also expanded its routes and now flies to seven of Hawai’i’s major airports with direct and nonstop service between six Hawaiian Islands.

Island Air is Hawaii’s leading regional carrier, serving airports on all major Hawaiian islands.

The airline offers flights between the Islands of O‘ahu (Honolulu International Airport), Maui (Kahului Airport and West Maui’s Kapalua Airport), Moloka‘i (Ho‘olehua Airport), Lana‘i (Lana‘i City Airport), Kaua‘i (Lihue Airport), and the Island of Hawai‘i (Kona International Airport).

Island Air has earned a reputation for warm, personalized care and attentive service while taking passengers to Hawai’i’s community and premier resort destinations.

Island Air operates a fleet of 37-seat Dash 8 turboprop aircraft. These airplanes provide reliable, on-time service to all destinations.

Island Air flies at lower altitudes than jets do, which provides passengers unparalleled views of Hawai’i’s magnificent scenery – pristine coastlines, spectacular mountains, frozen lava flows, plunging waterfalls and frolicking whales.

The Dash 8 features all-leather seating, large overhead compartments, air conditioning and comfortably pressurized cabins.
